The first Mawbey to arrive in Tasmania (then Van Diemen's Land) appears to have been a boy convict transported from England, John (Joseph) Mawbey (Morbey. He arrived on the John in 1833 after being sentenced to 14 years transportation at Leicester. Two years later, he was sentenced to a further 7 years for stealing in Hobart. Rumour has it that he ran away and lived with the Aborigines. This boy convict appears to be the forbear of the Tasmanian Mawbeys.

I've been reading through some material about the Mawbey family in Victoria that I was sent months ago by a fellow family historian.
There I found a reference to a young boy aged 10 who ran away in Tasmania and spent two years with Aboriginals.
Could this have been Joseph Mawbey?
